On the afternoon of January 8, 2022, amidst eager anticipation, the finals of the “Data-Driven Era: Intelligence in the Bay Area” Public Governance Data Analysis Competition, co-hosted by the Center for Chinese Public Administration at Sun Yat-sen University, the Department of Public Policy at City University of Hong Kong, and the Data Science Research Center at the University of Macau, officially kicked off in a hybrid format at the Guangzhou campus of Sun Yat-sen University.
This competition aligns with the trends of the digital age, guiding participants to enhance industry-academia-research collaboration through competitive formats, encouraging students to focus on the effective integration of digital technologies and public governance, and stimulating innovation and creativity. Thirteen teams conducted in-depth data discussions on various hot topics, including shared bicycles, telecom network fraud, citizen privacy, online governance, and industrial development in the Bay Area.
While the judges highly acknowledged the outstanding performances of the contestants, they also offered several suggestions: First, emphasize problem awareness and problem orientation to identify and solve valuable issues. Second, based on the academic framework of social sciences, utilize digital tools to effectively narrate social science stories, exploring causal mechanisms that provide clear explanations and targeted policy recommendations. Third, enhance the expressiveness of communication by engaging the audience through eye contact and vocal tone, advocating policies, and showcasing vitality and value.
The University of Macau’s participating teams presented projects titled “Digital Analysis of Elderly Smart Bracelet Functional Requirements — User Needs Mining Combined with Text Mining and Sentiment Analysis” and “Electricity Consumption Data Analysis and Forecasting Based on Big Data Technology,” winning a third prize and an Outstanding Thinking Award, respectively. Thus, the competition concluded successfully!
